So - thats a first. I phone interviewed on the train this morning for a new job. A web development firm in Mountain View is seeking an XML/XSLT specialist for a suite of higher education financial and development tools. The pay scale is very competitive (e.g. much, much higher than I'm making now) and would eventually be (after initial training) a work-from-home position. They were very pleased with my portfolio - particularly the customized now playing system I built on KDFC.com - which the hiring manager uses "daily" - (score!). They were effusive and very positive on the phone. She asked for references - and said that they would make an appointment to meet in person over lunch in the city (they are coming to me?) this week; and to stay tuned.

When I applied for this position and got asked to send links to particular portfolio pieces - I discussed it with Dave at length. This job would be very different than the one I have now - much less graphically oriented and much more head down in the code oriented. Data management - and the use of the data on the web - is of course a much higher demand skillset than graphic design. but - moving to a job that pays competitively - and where I could work from home are both things that made this job impossible not to apply for.

My retirement savings plan could certainly use the boost of a new salary - and I think my brain would welcome a challenge at work. I have long been 'stuck' in my current job - with no resources for further training nor any hope of "advancement" in the traditional sense - as I'm in the 4th largest market in the country for commercial radio - the largest in Entercom - and there is no "next" job for me. I've been at the radio stations for four years (come November) and we'll see what pans out. I'm a little nervous letting Entercom know that I am interviewing and looking for another job. But - their lack of investment in me as employee and their continuing cutting back of benefits (they cut the matching on 401K two years ago; and have not given anyone a raise in three years) --- as well as their "web/digital decisions made by salespeople with no idea what the web really is and how it works" leadership model has been extremely frustrating.

I'll keep ya'll up to date on what's "going down" - but this morning's interview went flawlessly - not a single "um - I don't know" question - even during the technical skills review with their team lead. so - :) - first step accomplished.
