live from the rainbow room.....
Jan. 9th, 2008 08:11 amAs I was toweling off from the morning beautification ritual - the iPod served up Jane Monheit's album "Live From The Rainbow Room". It's a simply magical live album of her performance in the famous 65th floor cabaret in New York. The orchestrations are rich - and well, Monheit is quite the siren. It was grand humming and singing along with her this morning. A favorite is "Tea for Two" from 'No No Nannette' and a very playful jazzy version of "Cheek to Cheek." With her amazing breakthrough recording "Surrender" this year - I'd imagine she has a richer repetoire now for a great cabaret show.
Whenever I travel to NY - I always search to see if she's performing. When I was in NY in 2001 - with my ex Jon - we saw her perform. (I can't remember the venue - somewhere up near Columbia U.) and it truly is one of the most sublime performances I can recall. at the time - she brought her then 5 year old son out to do "Over the Rainbow" with her as an encore.
She's one of my favorite singers, hands down. It's the kind of music you could play in the background at a dinner party, while getting ready for your day, or when you need a lift on a rainy cold day. (iTunes Linky To Her Music Here)
