the "anti-mass" cube
This piece, Cornelia Parker's "Anti-Mass", is amongst my favorite at the Deyoung Museum here in San Francisco. The plaque on the wall next to this free-hanging cube of pieces of burned wood reads, in part: “This sculpture is constructed from the charred remains of a Southern Black Baptist church that was destroyed by arsonists....Parker’s cube appears to defy gravity, providing a monumental object for quiet meditation and reflection."
I dreamt about this piece so vividly last night - that when I woke up at 1am - and reached for my bedside notebook I wrote interestingly enough -
"frolicking in Parker's AntiMass - warmed by the fire within the pieces of wood."
Holy crap what a dream that must have been.
Beyond waking and writing - I have no retained memory of the experience.
I don't remember who started me on the practice of keeping a dream notebook in the bedside table.... I think perhaps it might have been Anne Lamott (a writing mentor, author of Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life).....
anyways - - reading it this morning I had to go find the piece in my Deyoung photos.
