#18/365 (Offerings)
Jan. 18th, 2010 08:54 am"Our lives are like an hourglass that never stops....
Each moment follows the one before, without end.
From moment to moment, life drains away:
We are babies, then adults, then old and dead,
each moment follows the one before, without end.
Our live are like a bubble or a candle;
impermanence and death are like the wind...."

As with all things - you have to see the forest for the trees... the first section in the Buddhist offerings calendar book I'm using for these posts concentrates on the law of impermanence, or as the book puts it "the order of the universe" - so through February 11th - discussing impermanence, unavoidable reality and the stages of life pretty directly. the tone of some of these offerings is grave - but I think it is smart sometimes to hit things directly and not sugar coat things. Despite our best intentions - life just isn't a musical number from The Sound of Music. (cue 'I Have Confidence in Sunshine!") so while some of these offerings may seem repetitive - there is some work to be done in being more comfortable with the darker ideas - the unavoidable realities. I like to think that if we shake hands with things like growing older, death, disease, the simpler concept of impermanence - they don't wait at the next corner for us like a grim reaper - they walk beside us enriching the place we are RIGHT NOW.
