First order of business today was adding some new selections to the Dr. Goldberg fashion lineup. So we were off to JCPenney's for their fall men's sale. (Fall? already!?) Clothes shopping with Dave is an adventure. I'm tried to gently coerce and manipulate him suggest that we might get him to try some new colours!

Right off the bat, it was summarily announced that peach and/or salmon are on the "no chance in hell" list. and while green looks great on me - he simply will not consider it. So - - after much changing room runways and fussing (on my part) - "Oh look at this Dave - you'd look great in this?!.... No?..... well - OH - this shirt is much nicer than that one - it contrasts nicely with your darker... sweat.. shirts................. No? Well - look at this one? oh, right - wierd pockets.. well........(repeat adnauseum).

We finally settled on two new shirts! YAY!3 A lovely periwinkle blue and maroon were good additions:

Maroon with darker maroon stripes - and Periwinkle with white stripes - it is what ALL the sexy mathematicians are wearing this season....

This was followed by coming and home and the three of us (Dave, Moi, and Miss Kate) curling up for a rare and lovely afternoon nap. Miss Kate woke us about after 30 minutes with her LOUD snorts and snoring. (giggle) so we decided it was time for a KateyDogAdventuretm

The Greeting Party at Herbert Hoover Dog Park in Palo Alto, CA

In our ongoing search for the best offleash spot for Miss Kate - we visited Herbert Hoover Dog Park. It's close to the house (although not walkable with our ten year old goddess; she'd make one way but not both); shady - and all the owners and doggies were very friendly. We met Big Rasterfarian style black WaterHounds, a pair of gorgeous cocker spaniels, a white fluffball named "Sirus"; and walked in on a conversation of owners where a lady was visiting the dog park the day after having to put her labrador down yesterday. (got us all close to tears!)

As is the case - just as I got going with the camera - the batteries gave out. (Dave has always reminded me to keep extras in my pocket but will I? noooooooooo-ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!)

But - I think we have decided that Hoover Park will be our go-to dog socialization destination. We'll keep Miss Kate's adoring fans in the know as things proceed.

Tonight? It's "Angels and Demons" - the sequel to THE DAVINCI CODE with Tom Hanks. or it could be "ROAD TO PERDITION" with Tom Hanks. Dave is still pondering the decision. We discussed over dinner our next few movies in que: 1) Strictly Ballroom (Dave Pick) , 2) The Way We Were (Robert pick), 3) Duplicity (Robert Pick), 4) Ghost Writer (Us Pick) and 5) La Mission (Us Pick) - - and Dave gave me a patented iRoll over The Way We Were and said the only reason he's watching it is because I let him rent "Dinner with Andre." I hope to catch him enjoying the Babs and Redford romance. :) Do you like TWWW?

So - tomorrow I start the new job - albeit from home for the first week. I'll be authoring/designing case studies of Stanford's peer institutions - with particular focus on their Residential programs (student housing and faculty housing) and Dining (eateries, cafeterias, and catering) - as well as how other Universities showcase their conference facilities. ([livejournal.com profile] philbutrin? I may consult you on format and such for reports like these.) So Miss Kate will have me at home for one more week while Stanford finishes some in-office personnel changes they wanted complete before I arrive and become a member of the team.

More at home workouts and making sure I get out and get social - - I do not do "all by myself" for very long without going TOTALLYCOMPLETELYBATSHITCRAZY! ..... ahem. so - will be dragging Paul [livejournal.com profile] pklexton and Perry [livejournal.com profile] blktalon out for lunch/dinner etc. -- and seeing if Larry [livejournal.com profile] urbear and/or Auntie Hurst [livejournal.com profile] allanh can soak in palmolive sometime this week. Oh - and I might try (since I'm working from home) to arrange a bike ride with the [livejournal.com profile] psi_star_psi/[livejournal.com profile] aelfie clan.

wonders what good in the world we'd do if we stopped spending American dollars bombing parts of the world for years upon years - and instead - spent the same amount of resources saving people.

Flood-affected people wade through water for higher ground in Muzaffargarh near Multan on Aug. 13. (K.M. Chaudary / AP)

The flooding in Pakistan is JUST ONE topic. I listened this week to stories about the growing chasm between the rural parts and metropolitan parts of India - and how in one of the largest countries in the world the poor have no rights - and women are still chattle/property. I listened to this week about the crisis of "corrective rape" against lesbian women in South Africa. How gangs of men are charging into lesbian parties and hidden clubs, and raping them to show them the "pleasure" of natural sex.

listening - and knowing these things - literally has me feeling helpless when I think about it. and also very aware of how ever single problem in my life is inconsequential in comparison. Listening to NPR and listening to the suffering going relatively unabated in other parts of the world simply breaks my heart.
