I like that I'm a sensitive guy - that romantic movies make me cry.
There are a few that everytime I watch; make me cry.
I'm watching "City of Angels" with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. and from the very beginning where Cage's character (an angel) walks away with the little girl who says her favorite part of being alive is "pajamas - flannel - with feet" I know the movie was a critical mess and all that - but when I'm in a snuggled on the couch with my terrier mood. It's a favorite to watch. Scenes like walking through the library - and listening to the people read in their minds - where a man is reading Hemingway's THE MOVEABLE FEAST - Nicolas Cage is so beautiful in this film - he speaks so deliberately - and softly. and his eyes - omg - his eyes are so soft. then her scene in the bath making out with a rolling rock beer. yes sir. It is a such a modern take on the role of angels might take in our lives. I know it's soppy and I know it's manipulative. this movie is also one of the reasons I love pears. and it has a tender score written by Gabriel Yared.
Top Five BobSob Movies?
1. Children of A Lesser God
2. The Colour Purple
3. City of Angels
4. Memoirs of a Geisha
5. Everything is Illuminated.
thank you for making me feel like I'm not alone tonight

Date: 2007-09-09 04:50 am (UTC)I adore The Color Purple and watch it at least once a year and cry every time.
I LOVED the movie City of Angels right up until the last minutes. I was furious. The movie was plugged as a romantic movie. The fact that ... Well, I don't want to ruin it for anyone but I have refused to ever watch it again!
Memoirs of a Geisha disappointed me. I liked it, but there was just something...wrong. Like a baseball player who just keeps missing the ball, but just barely. Leaves the crowd enthralled, but ultimately annoyed.
I also did NOT care for Children of A Lesser God. Marlee Matlin just annoys the shit out of me. She made it a bit difficult (years and years later) for me to enjoy What the Bleep Do We Know!?
Everything is Illuminated is one of my all time favorite movies. It simply stunned me. I've seen it at least three or four times minimum and I cry with each viewing. I adore The Color Purple and watch it at least once a year and cry every single time. I like cry-movies that have a feel good quality, not ones that end with death or worse. So I loved Steel Magnolias, Amélie, Chocolat and a host of others. I am thinking of heading downstairs to watch De-Lovely right now!

Date: 2007-09-09 12:17 pm (UTC)The scene towards the end of the Color Purple when her kids come back from Africa is an amazing scene. When their robes billow up in the field and Whoopi's character cups her mouth in both surprise and love is a sob inducing scene for sure.
City of Angels made me cry, but for other reasons.

Date: 2007-09-09 02:16 pm (UTC)One recommendation for you: One of my favorite cry films is a rather obscure film "Truly, Madly, Deeply" (1991) which is really perfect for a good cry about relationships lost and new relationships developing. Stars Juliet Stevenson (love her) and Alan Rickman.
If you haven't seen it, trust me, you'll like it.

Date: 2007-09-10 04:36 am (UTC)Memoirs as a movie was gawd awful! They completely castrated the characters in lieu of pretty cinematography.
Please, please, please do me a favor and read the book if you haven't already. You owe yourself this one.

Date: 2007-09-10 04:40 am (UTC)I would send you my copy but I have no idea where it is. buried in the living room somewhere I guess. :P
I guess I'm just one of those book snobs. It's rare I enjoy a movie better than the book from which it stems.
American Psycho and the LOTR trilogy are my exceptions so far. Heh.
