I have a new neighbor - in one of the neighboring buildings. She is a small female child that has learned that screaming gets her things. High pitched, five alarm screaming. Pulsing, high pitched screaming. She's been at it for about two weeks. I can't imagine the sound impact at close range - because at neighbor range - it makes want to find a tazor weapon of some sort. and use it. This morning's screaming fit - has lasted about 30 minutes. Miss Kate just looked up at me as if to say "is that little monster ever going to stop making that noise? jeesh!" and let out a little sigh. Perhaps we should head to the dogpark for a while - but screamingdevilchildfromhelltm is in the building between here and the park. So we'll probably hear her there too. ugh.

My former next-door-neighbor had a granddaughter who employed the same technique, and used it even when she thought she might not get her way. She got her comeuppance from her peers. She and her friends set up a foot race. Soon after the "GO", it became clear that she wasn't going to win her set, so she started screaming. This distracted a few, who stopped to see what was wrong, and she sprinted ahead. One older girl nailed her with a look and asked, "What is wrong with you?" Once her tactic was called into question, she quickly dropped it...at least with her friends.

Ugh! I loathe parents that cannot control their children. I've been around children like that and it's maddening. Girls especially have high pitched scream that seams to rupture the ossicles in my ear. Hope she finds some lollipop or something soon!

Call child protective services and request that someone check out the residence. It can be done anonymously. Perhaps, the embarassment of having people think they are abusing their child, will inspire the parents to do something about the kid's misbehavior! I'd be nuts listening to that!

Now if that were Miss Kate "crying", I am sure these would be the first neighbors to complain. Why do people imagine that the rest of the world sees it as a privilege to be tormented by their ill-mannered offspring?

well, where else would the devil child be from? Of course she's from Hell.

I like the CPS strategy. After all, you don't know that there isn't actually something wrong.... Okay you do know that there is something wrong, but you don't know what.

good luck.

"For your child. Enjoy! (I know I will!)"

Love,

The rest of the building

Maybe they'll get the hint ;)

when I was a kid, and acting out like that was not tolerated. If I ever dared put on such a show I was smacked into next Tuesday and I turned out just... um just fin... er nevermind.

I don't blame the children I blame the parents but it is the children in the end that I can't stand to be around.

Kill the children, kill the children, kill the children

That's brilliant. Robert, do what the man says.
Personally I loathe screaming children and wouldn't mind a bit if someone introduced them to duct tape ... several yards of it.

I notice this in so many public places, these days. Bellowing babies and tantrum toddlers. But I can't blame them. Their parents should be teaching them the basics of good behaviour. Sadly,in most cases the parents are just as bad. And because of our child-centred society, where kids cannot be even mildly admonished by outsiders, we all have to put up increasing decibels from their little treasures. Give me a dog any day.

On of the comedy albums I heard years ago had an "ad" for "St. Preservous Tablets for Children" which had the same effect.

At the very least, you give the parents more ammo - "Quiet down, or those people from CPS will take you away again!"

Bizzle has also learned that screaming gets him stuff around the house - Timeouts mainly.

The problem with babies/toddlers in public is that sometimes, regardless of their upbringing, they just lose it and there's not much you can do. Ironically, as a parent, the action most likely to cause a tantrum in a toddler is when you do enforce discipline.
