Big Sur Car Trip.....
Oct. 25th, 2008 08:04 pmDavid and I drove to Pfieffer Beach and Big Sur today - we were truly unprepared for the massive fire damage that the forest fires caused there last summer. The photo below used to be a lush thick forest - and literally almost to the highway - a lot of the forest that was there is simply gone. It was pretty devastating.
Most of the best trails are gone at Pfieffer Big Sur State Park - and the camping side of the park is closed indefinitely. - and down the coast at Julia Pfieffer Park the fire came all the way to the ocean in several spots burning everything down to the last bush. Very intense stuff.

Big Sur Forest Fire Scar
That didn't stop us actually from having a great day - we ran around windows down the whole way down till the fog poured in just south of Big Sur... Making the McWay waterfall invisible when we parked to walk there only to find out we couldn't see it. We drove back up the coast and the hit of the day was Pfieffer Beach. It was also socked in with fog - but - everyone there was in such a great happy mood, the waves were HUGE - causing tremendous crashing waves. The beach features holes in the rock where waves hit - and then intensify frothing through the breaks in the rock. David took these photos but paid for it with wet shoes.

We had an absolutely lovely day out with Miss Kate in the sand....
