"It is not easy to be reborn as a human being. It is rarer than for a one-eyed turtle, who rises to the surface only once every hundred years, to push his neck through a wooden yoke with one hole that floats on the surface of the wide ocean"
- Buddha Shakyamuni.

One of my favorite daily rituals (I'm big on ritual in my life...) is reading from a book called Offerings: Buddhist Wisdom for Everyday. So I've decided that my LJ in 2010 will follow this book in it's daily offering - and some days I might discuss it; ruminate on it - or I might just post the quote and nothing else - or the quote - and a totally unrelated post or (surprise?) a picture of food.

It is not lost on me how much abundance we live in - and how can make choices.

  • We can accentuate the positive - or we can find negatives to spotlight.
  • We can bitch about being fat (me darlings, not any of you.) - or we can take the tools we know how to use (the gym, the food diary, etc.) and do something about it.
  • We can load our lives up with appointments, tasks, social engagement, work, and hobbies till our calendar is full to capacity - or we can focus on quality over quantity.

It is also not lost on me that change is constant - and expecting things to "remain as they are" is a naive and foolhardy approach to the journey.

You never know if that man you say hello to on the train; or the woman you hold the door for; or the co-worker who you spontaneously take to lunch; or the help you accept from a co-worker whom you've previously disliked; or the words of encouragement you could receive from an LJ'er very far away whom you've only met on your laptop; or the photo of a beautiful place you've never dreamed of.... What if all of that is helping you and others as they work their way to the surface and the little push you give with a smile and warmth - - is that breath of fresh air both of you needed?

Here's to a fine, fine new year! (clink)
