I just got home after witnessing a very intense vehicle/bicycle accident on his way home. The intersection of El Camino and Galvez is very busy - and you can't afford not to look or read all the signs. A guy turned right at probably 25-30MPH acceleration right into a bicyclist. RIGHT in front of me. The bicyclist went away on a backboard in an ambulance. The driver was white as a sheet and hyperventilating from the shock of hitting someone. I gave my statement and biked home VERY carefully.
It is a giant four way intersection with six lanes on El Camino and the right turn has to yield to the cross walk - instead of having a separate WALK light and THEN the left turn. From now on - I'll be going home exclusively another route that is not so busy and does not actually 'cross' El Camino - up at University Ave - El Camino goes underneath - relieving a lot of safety worries.
it's an extra half mile home that today proves is ABSOLUTELY worth it.
how scary!
