tuolumne meadows and snooty french waiters....

oh gosh I forgot how much I dislike dark mornings. I got up to go to the gym this morning in the dark - and i've been home, showered and checked morning emails - and just NOW is the sun rising. I just fed Miss Kate. complete with French waiter impression (i blame [livejournal.com profile] septimuswarren)

"We 'ave a nice. vite. rice. vehhhhhrrrrry nice. vehhhhhhrrrrry light. prrrfect for a sensuhtive pal ette."

She had some rice - and doesn't seem to care much for cottage cheese. But I'm hoping as she eats and gains strength she'll become more accepting of the cottage cheese as it's protein! (oh my god I sound like Tommy!)

I have been sitting here with my bowlo'kona watching the sunrise become early morning - - the colours are fantastic - -

The sleep I haven't really been getting this week is catching up a little bit. Saturday is going to be a SERIOUS loaf day if I have anything to say about it.

on another note - I've been reading John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra - recommended me to a friend on a thoreau-list. Muir is the western equivalent of Thoreau (HDT being my somewhatsortakinda obsessive mentor from literature and history). Muir felt very strongly that the best way to empower people to want to protect the wild places of the earth was to get them out to enjoy them. It's got me breaking out maps and seeing if I might plan some hikes on the Muir Trail next spring and summer. Muir's little book is very similiar to Walden by Thoreau as it's simulataneously diary and pulpit-on-a-page. (etext here if you are interested)

well - best get showered and into work. I stopped by the Body Shop yesterday and stocked up on Bergamot Bath Gel and a lotion bar from Lush. (kelly voice)Lotion Bars Rule!(end kelly voice)

Maybe try a teensy weensy eensy bit of salt in the cottage cheese?

I've been noticing that I get to work before the sunrise these days - and I dislike that. I love driving in and watching the sky go from dusky blue to peach and pink and then the pale blue-white. I feel like I'm opening a book to a new chapter, stepping out on a new adventure when the morning unfolds as I make my way from house to office.

One of my favorite things is to take a cup of coffee out on the deck and listen to the birds go from sleepy to perky as the sun rises. That, now, gets reserved for the weekends - usually from the point of being up all night writing and finally realizing it's time to wind down and get some sleep.

I work better at night - less mental noise, I think.

I haven't really gotten into him, but I would imagine you would like reading Barry Lopez, if you haven't already.

[identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"him" being Thoreau - or Muir? or both?

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, for a writer, I sure botched that reference, didn't I? LOL!

I totally love Thoreau and have read and quoted him extensively. I never read Muir. I meant to say that although I haven't read much of Barry Lopez, I think you'd like him from the little I have read. Sounds very similar to how you describe Muir.

Muir was a trained scientist, botanist - and so his take on things is much less rougharoundtheedges than HDT. I need to find a good biography on Muir and learn more. :)

any particular Lopez title I might start with?

[identity profile] budmassey.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a good place to start with Lopez is his Desert Notes/River Notes set.

So cute! How many dogs get their meal served by a French waiter!?

Cheer up. The end of DST in two weeks (and change) will shift mornings to start later in relation to the sun, so you'll get some light again for a while... at least until winter catches up. :-)

Azziz! LIGHT!

[identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm lucky to have a rather large apartment by SF standards - I just need more light. :) I'm going to talk tot he landlord about a ceiling fan fixture with bigger bulbs.

Track lighting!

ImageNo - but the Bryson book sounds delightful. (and who wouldn't love that cover?) Muir's book is more naturalist and diary than work of fiction; and was written in 1911.

[identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
oh cool - the way the review read I thought it was a fiction based on his trip. I'll put it on my TO READ list. :)

[identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just reserved the title at the library :) thanks for this tip!

I got Bryson's book today from the library - have a detective novel to go afterwards - but... its on the list.

Will Katey's vet let you give her a little shredded up breast of chicken yet? You could add it bit by bit to the rice. I'd get whole breasts with the skin and bones and simmer it for a couple of hours, until it falls off the bone easily, and then keep the broth to use for mixing the rice and chicken together.

[identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com 2007-10-11 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
she is on unblemished rice and cottage cheese strictly for 10 days - no treats - no nothing. but I'll add chicken after 10 days.

I've read a compilation of Muir's writings called 'The Wilderness Journeys' that includes his autobiographical 'The Story of my Boyhood and Youth', alongside others such as the Sierra book, and his 'Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf'.

I first heard of him at an exhibition in Edinburgh (my old hometown) as he spent his childhood nearby before his family emigrated to Wisconsin. I picked up the book at the exhibition and it's a pretty amazing read, though of course he might have exaggerated things a bit. Nevertheless, an extraordinary guy, and his writings give a great insight into the USA of the late 1800s.

yeah - I'm digging it a great deal. It (the book we're talking about) was used foremostly to get Yosemite saved as a National Park.

Welcome to MY world - up at 2.40am this morning, to start work at 4.00am! And I remarked, whilst walking back from the Emirates office after the briefing, how EARLY it gets light in the morning - 4.50am to be precise! LOL

Well, we go on to Daylight Savings at the end of this month, so the evenings will be pleasant too! Yaaaaay! Afternoons after work at the beach!

Oh - and Bergamot is SOOOOO totally my favourite essential oil! Mmmmm..... *sniff*
