My first book purchase from the bookstore is Sid Goldstein's "The Wine Lover Cooks With Wine."

Synopsis: The long-awaited follow-up to the best-selling Wine Lover's Cookbook, The Wine Lover Cooks with Wine sets its sights on wine as an ingredient. Whether used to delicately poach fresh fish or braise a hearty stew, wine adds complexity and intensity to food -- not to mention flavor. In his usual engaging style, Goldstein explores a range of wine and reveals how each is used best in cooking. From classic Marsala Chicken to savory pork tenderloin topped with a zinfandel-based roasted-plum jam, each tantalizing recipe illustrates to dazzling effect the benefits -- and pleasures -- of cooking with wine. Complete with enticing photographs of both the food and the wine, this cookbook is an inspiring resource for wine lovers looking to think outside of the glass.

My second title is "Altar Your Space: A Guide to The Restorative Home"

Synopsis: Jagatjoti Khalsa says that sacred furnishings — like beautiful pieces sculpted by human hands from real wood, colorful textiles imbued with spirit and purpose — should be the foundation of a home's décor. Drawing inspiration from the East and utilizing a team of Indian craftspeople and artisans, Khalsa suggests simple ways to fill the home with spirit-infused decorations. Using examples from his bold work for Sharon Stone, Joely Fisher, Adrienne Brody, Shiva Rae, and others, Khalsa demonstrates how to make any living space, whether kitchen, child’s playroom, home office, or the entire house, more spiritual. Engaging text and 150 color photographs help readers imagine and implement the creative possibilities of such items as antique Chinese wagon wheels, silk bedding, Tara statues, Asian pine tables made from 300-year-old railroad ties, antique screen doors, and Kela vine bedding. Altar Your Space shows how small changes and a new perspective can make any home a true haven for personal growth and joy.

Ummm... I thought you were working at the bookstore to earn some money, not spend it. :)

well - the wine book was on the sale rack for $8.99 (regularly 24.99 - so - I snatched it up) and the Alter book - I'm previewing as a staff member and will return. I get a 35% discount as a staff member too so the 8.99 magically became 6.39. how could I resist it at that point?

LOL! Rationalization is so much fun, especially when it gets you the things you'll enjoy for a long time! :)

Well!

<------takes his books and his $6.39 and plays in another sandbox where his rationalizations will be welcomed and encouraged...

Hey, hey, hey, I smiled when I said it!

And I should know about that technique; I use it all the time myself!

You just gave me a great gift idea for the R-man. Actually, I got him this cool wine cabinet/rack/butler because every time I'm there, he fishes out wine from the top shelf of his coat closet. But I've been racking my brain for something from the kids for him!!

Thank You!! Duh. The first book that is!

the predesscor (The Wine Lover's Cookbook) (as I mentioned to mr. phoenix above) is equally as good... if you can find them at a discount book store it might be nice to get them both.

Did the Altar book mention vashu sastra? My Indian friends tell me it predates, and may actually be the basis for, feng shui.

'Altar Your Space' sounds groovy - though...does it only take from Eastern spirituality. While I understand the woods and scents and colour palette are mellow and accomodating it would be interesting if something came from Western and Gnostic traditions.
As an ex-Catholic boy I can't help but make things into altars and people I have lived with have rightly raised their eyebrows. Add in the fascination with western old school tattoos, punk rock, bike clubs and celtic shamanism and I'm sitting pretty. Ansel Adams meets the Hells Angels by way of Vivienne Westwood and Russian Orthodox Iconography...
does anyone have Sharon Stones number ???

I like the ideas behind the Altar Your Space book. It is why I have my gr.gr.gr.grandmother's spinning wheel hanging on a wall - and my gr.grandmother's Victorian hall tree by my door - and an antique cherry wood desk with brass pineapple pull handles in my parlor and an 1830's steamer trunk that belonged to one of my gr.uncles...

These are the things that make a house - a home.
