I spent the afternoon watching La Vien Rose the biopic of Edith Piaf. What an utterly beautiful film............simply stunning, beautiful film making. And a showstopping performance by Marion Cottilard. Simply unlike any movie I've seen in a very long time.

Nice film; Yes

Saw it about 6 months ago at the New Art here in Long Beach. I was in a depressive episode, but it was the last day it was showing and had to see it. Unfortunately her life was so short and tragic. Cotillard nailed Piaf when it came to singing. That means she wasn't singing too good to be Edith. In the early 80's I saw a stage production filmed for TV. Edith Piaf was played by Mirieille Matthieu. Mathieu is a fantastic vocalist and it was my first introduction to Piaf. I was so disappointed when I bought a recording of the original Edith Piaf. I was expecting a polished virtuouso vocalist. While she was a good cabaret act she was not a very good vocalist. In my opinion this film did not show Piaf in a very good light. But then this may be exactly how she was. I don't pretend to be any expert on history or film and I was very depressed when I saw it so my perception may be skewed. Perhaps I should see it again with a clear mind. LOL. Interesting I have such an opinion of a movie. I'm usually a pushover for movies. Normally like them all; though I like some more than others. :)

Actually, Marion Cotillard didn't do any singing at all for this film. MOST of the recordings used in the film were actually of Edith Piaf. 4 songs were performed by someone named Jil Aigrot.

I thought it was a pretty good film, too. Episodic, but, then, biopics are usually episodic almost of necessity. Marion Cotillard did her job brilliantly. Having said all that, I'm not sure it's a film I'll see again. I was just too exhausted at the end. There is, fortunately, loads of Edith on film.

I'm a huge fan of Piaf. I won't respond to your comments about her singing abilities other than to say that I think she's one of those performers who is a decidedly acquired taste.
