I am in love with treasure island. It really is a most magical vantage point on the world. They are renting old family housing on the island now as apartments. I'm soooooooooooooo looking into it.

then I spent the afternoon - down at Foothills College seeing a lovely college production of "My Fair Lady." It was remarkable - had the expected flaws of a young cast. but is one of my favorites of all time.

here are pics from the island:

I used to work for the company that manages the housing on treasure Island. The city is not maintaining the properties, but merely getting the use out of them before they are torn down. Some of the units are condemned and not even rented at this point. The makeup of the tenants would definitely not be in harmony with a single gay male. There are no stores, or even coffee shops on an island. Run out of something at 2 a.m., and there you are driving into the city. I did have a friend who lived out there and he said it was a very lonely place to live. People who would think nothing of taking BART to the East Bay would somehow have great objection to the Muni bus. Entertaining became difficult for him and his guests, purely for travel reasons.

I myself looked into living out there, but for these and many other reasons. I decided it was not for me. I want to be part of this vibrant wonderful city, not out in the middle of the bay looking back at it.

Morgan and I zipped around T.I. a couple of weeks ago, it was his first time down there. I do wish that they would finish 'denavy'ing it though. It did not start off as a Navy Base and who knows what is being harbored in the old buildings all over the place. I've thought several times about how convenient it might be to live on the 'island', but what holds me back is that it is built out of landfill. It didn't fare too badly in 1989, but who knows what the ground would do during a major Hayward slip. I wish that the coast guard station on Loma Prieta was being sold off so the land there could be made available. It is pretty breathtaking up there.

Don't jump before you spend some more time and do some research about Treasure Island. From what I have seen, it looks like it could be a bit rowdy over there.

a great amount of Hunters Point folks were relocated there enmasse - and yes - it can get pretty rowdy apparently. but my buds (pictured in the post) know the right little spots to find a unit and promised they'd go with me if I arranged to tour some open units. It strikes me that it might be a good fit for me if the right unit opened - a quiet place to escape from the city to, with the city a 5-10 minute drive away or 20 minute bus ride.

The Wikipedia wasn't that kind to the place.

After the Naval Station closed in 1997, Treasure Island was opened to residential and other uses, but according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Toxic Substances Control, the groundwater and air are contaminated with asbestos, plutonium, radium and other substances which are known to cause cancer and other illnesses.[3]

Another risk of living on Treasure Island is the high risk of liquefaction during an earthquake. All of Treasure Island is built on landfill, and few if any of the buildings on the island were built to withstand a major earthquake, much less an earthquake magnified by liquefaction.

As of November of 2007, the Cosco Busan container ship oil spill cleanup efforts have ignored Treasure Island. One may find oil off the shores of the entire island, posing a health threat to people or animals who come in contact with it.[citation needed]
