In the summer of 1999 I drove to Aspen to see Ray Charles at a jazz festival. Diana opened for him. No one knew who she was. She was about 3 months from getting the attention that put her where she is now. She came out on the stage with long, blond, perfectly straight hair, a white camel hair trench coat, a mini-skirt, and sunglasses. She sat on the end of the piano bench so she faced the crowd, but turned her upper body so she could play the ivories. She started her first song with that throaty, smokey voice she has, and the audience fell in love. It was amazing. The whole experience was so sensual.
