#6 - [livejournal.com profile] ubermunkey asks "so Bob, lol. Man you are a riot sometimes. My question, what is your favorite hangout spot in SF, why and can I have a pic?"

The inside of Bean There Espresso Cafe

It should come as no surprise to regular readers of the muffinlog - that a coffee shop wins "favorite hangout spot in SF". Originally introduced to me when I first moved here by Mike [livejournal.com profile] pharmbear, Bean There Espresso Cafe is my main hangout spot. Imagine my delight when I found my apartment that it was right across the friggin' street! I know all the staff, Chmee, Scott, Jan, Michael, Ahmed and Ginger. They all know that I'm a nonfat double mocha nowhip.

There is a regular crew of the usual suspects like Tony (pictured below) who is a former Broadway actor who flamed out (burned out) and landed in SF to start a new life as a legal secretary. He drives a orangesicle orange Vespa and brings Miss Kate a Puparonni Treat each morning. There is Brenda and her lovely German Shepard Dax - Jim and his perfectly groomed (spoiled) golden lab Marx - and our newest coffee cabal member, Mike and his 12 week old beagle puppy Hoppy. I never seem to have my camera in my pocket when Hoppy shows up - but trust me - you'll melt just like the rest of us do. We all sit out front of Bean There in the mornings and pet our dogs, watch Hoppy try to take on Marx who is easily 9 times her size. Marx sorta looks down at her like - (russian accent) whatever little puppy - I ignore you now (end russian accent). Miss Kate wins the contest of luring pets and random love from folks walking by heading to the N line. She sits in the sun and particularly young men just can't resist her. They break out in babytalk and give her a ear scritch. She, of course, soaks it up like water into a sponge. Strangely enough - even when Hoppy, the cutest beagle puppy ever!, is around - Miss Kate still wins. She knows how to "work the cute" as Tony would say. LOL!

Thanks for the question, Connor!

That they might be trying to win favours with Miss Kate's owner, of course never entered the picture.

You. Miss Kate. Cute man (and what is it with you and the cute mens who keep sitting next to you in early morning sunlight? enough to almost make a man want to be a morning person) (almost) next to you. I'd be doing my best to get the dog's attention. :P

Oh. And darlin?

(hands over polish) There you go. Get a smudge on that halo, right there.

That is one of my favorites too, for their lattes and croisants. I purchased their beans once and was initially short changed the weight of the scope, so I'm not as excited to go there, but I stop by about once a week maybe. We must cross at different times.

I'll have a vente nonfat decaf sugar-free vanilla latte to go, please.

And a big helping of Tony on the side.

[This will only make sense if you're a fan of Larry Niven's work]

Chmee?

What was he called before he earned his Name? Speaker-to-customers?

Not to bore you with details, but in several of Larry Niven's science fiction books and stories, Chmee is the name of one particular character, a member of a cat-like species called the Kzinti. Most male Kzinti go through life with only a descriptive title; actual names are reserved for the nobility and those who perform some sort of heroic deed. Chmee's original title was Speaker-to-Animals, referring to his role as a (ahem) diplomat. Sort of.

Female Kzinti are non-sentient and so never have names at all. So... if she's using the name of the Niven character, she's consciously fucking with it. ;)
