too early?

so - David and I have been dating for six weeks.

is it too early to tell him that I like football?

i'm not really worried - I thought the question was silly. I laughed posting about it. There are a lot more serious questions and concepts to worry about - a lot more than whether someone watches college ball.

Thanks for the folks that answered this post with real concern - but - there is nothing to worry about. I mean - David doesn't even have a TV - so on Palo Alto weekends? we won't even be able to watch the game if we wanted. and I don't have cable at home. and show me a gay bar that plays the football game... thats right out of a fantasy. Okay- the lonestar plays the games - but on mute - with blaring music. not quite the same as "watching the game."

Not unless you are expecting him to participate and he doesn't share your enthusiasm. Otherwise, go ahead. What could be a problem with it?

Have you considered football roleplay in the bedroom as an introduction to the sport?

You can be the tight end.

ooooh! I like this game more already!

I feel sorry for the linemen. The tight ends and wide receivers get all the attention and even the quarterback gets to have his hand on the balls.

I don't see the harm in it, Robert. :)

(giggle) I think it's more just that I don't know many gay men that are into watching/talking/attending football. If he says he loves football - I might have to marry him on the spot. (swoon)

Do you like football?

Bob: David, there is something really important I have to ask you. (gets down on one knee) Will you watch football with me?

David: Yessss....oh....WHAT??????

I enjoy watching a good football game, but can't keep up with the individual players and stats. Baseball used to be my sport back in the 1990's I attended countless Giants and Athletics games. My ex isn't a sports fan, so I'd hit or watch games with my coworkers. Time to change that!

come on into town - I'll put ya up - and we can go hit a Giants game or A's game. Work has tickets and I could grab a pair.

Y'know, hmmm...too much self-disclosure too soon can be a warning sign. It's only April; there are months before the football season starts. Your relationship is still in its spring, as well. That's a pretty big deal to put on someone else's shoulders, the whole "You will be a football widow" idea. Is disclosure the right thing, right now? I feel you in this regard.

But! The Australian Rules Football season is on right now in Aussie, and the rugby season is coming up soon, too! You could always invite him to watch those rather "foreign" games to get a feel for his reaction. And, of course, I rather prefer the rugby and Aussie Rules uniforms myself...

i'm not that fanatical - and honestly - it was a flip smartassy sort of question.

Robert, this is no doubt a lesson to all of us writerly types about how hard it is to communicate flippancy :-) Because my answer was intended to be flip, too!

(Although I'd definitely check out the ruggers with him.)

well - I know David likes jockstraps (i don't know whether that's too much information) - so is it THAT much of a stretch that he'd like football?

I'm really excited to join you and Mr.Ph in a writers circle come May!

From: [identity profile] surewood31.livejournal.com
Oh it's a stretch. I mean, seeing men bare assed with their junk hanging out the front is WAYYYY different then all covered in padding and jerseys.

Hmmm, we should start a protest that the NFL has to play NUDE.

From: [identity profile] audrabaudra.livejournal.com
I know! The writers circle's going to be fun, and I'm looking forward, too!

Maybe if he can imagine the boys in their jockstraps...

Really, check out the All Blacks. There's always Dan Carter to look at on the field, and he's not all covered up with a helmet and faceguard, either. If all else fails, you can send David to Dan Carter's Jockey site for the underwear ad campaign Carter did: http://www.jockeyperformance.co.nz/SB_home.htm

It's a win-win.

Yes indeed...but you can tell him you need to watch the game on TV because you are afraid that when the teams go into a huddle...they may be talking about you

Is there any reason to believe that David is not lurking on lj, and therefore already knows about this little proclivity?

oh - it is a good possibility. :)

he'd also know that I shamelessly flirt with you too!

so that is two issues out in the open :);)

It totally depends on what teams you like and dislike!

It's all about the RAVENS and the Terrapins baby!

Oh, please. Tell Dave about Slingbox and as a techno-geek he'll rush out to get one, and you just tell him as a test, you'll watch the game.

Date: 2008-04-18 04:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] low-fat-muffin.livejournal.com
actually David is an anti-techno geek. He doesn't own a television. a coffee maker. and his stereo is a handheld cd player plugged into old cube speakers.

so - the slingbox angle won't work.

but I'll break him in gently.

Have you seen all the toys that PARC has? Give me a break. Maybe he doesn't have them at home, but he plays with them at work.

he does math at work. :) his current work is on the affect of the environment on naturally occuring sugars. environmental math. Since PARC seperated from Xerox he says their research has greatly expanded. He actually prides himself on being anti-technology.

I have to say go for it. I told my guys I loved football and one of them even went with me once to a game. They even said that if I decided to get back my season tickets they would even come with me at times.
