My lovely friend Jeff (
retired101) saw me in the dogpark and rightfully asked "Why don't you take your design skills in web and print and try and find a better job instead of downsizing and moving in with folks?" and he asks a real good question. The point I reached is this - in working at KDFC, KOIT and The Wolf - I have a unique opportunity to build a solid programming and design portfolio IN San Francisco. Particularly with KDFC - I'm pulling off promotional events that are the first of their kind in the country (9400 votes online in the recent Classical Star Search competition, and my work with KDFC won me national recognition within the company this year). I am about to debut a completely redesigned WOLF website and just debuted a new freshened KOIT logo. I simply love the people I work with - and the work that I do. and I'd like at least 2 or 3 years on the resume there before I look to move up the food chain. I'm doing super cool stuff now - and can only imagine where learning Ajax and other GUI tools is going to take me in the next year. Work is also going to invest to send me to flash training - and video editing training. so - I need to stay put - it's a responsible right decision. That said? My income is what it is - and the move can help me maneuver in an entirely new way within that parameter. (debt free in a year or so) so - I know a few of you others out there were prolly thinking the same thing. I'm dating a great guy; have a great job; I'm in a world-class city full of food, theater and adventure. and all I'm doing is structuring things so I can make the most of it possible. :) omg - I'm being adult and stuff.

Exactly
Date: 2008-05-06 07:39 am (UTC)I'd rather live more modestly now than having a job that would be worse. It's all a matter of balancing. I used to have a job that paid 25% more but asked 50% more of me. Now I have more jobs, but it's the same time and they only ask 10% more. Fair, isn't it?
(And yes, we're being adults, hehehe)

Date: 2008-05-06 11:35 am (UTC)I experienced that earlier this year. Several of my friends asked why I didn't go for the ED position at work, and my answer was quite similar to yours. I'm happy where I'm at...no need to change right now.

Roomates are almost a requirement instead of a random luxury.

Date: 2008-05-06 02:16 pm (UTC)Also, there is a great deal to be said about "modest comfort"... too many people are always looking upward, always upward... they never take the time to enjoy where they are. Take time, enjoy, plant seeds, explore this spot in the road... then, when you're satisfied and ready, climb on!
