A forest fire has started in BigSur and they have closed California's famously beautiful Highway 1 for a 20 mile stretch - so when David and I head to San Simeon and Hearst Castle this weekend - we have to go down 101 and away from the ocean almost the entire drive.

(wah!) So.....

  • No Monterrey
  • No Big Sur
  • No Pfeiffer Burns State Park waterfall hikes
  • and no beautifulromanticlovedoveyhandholdyoceandrivetm

(double wah!)

I just talked to a nice lady at the highway department who informed me that the stretch of road is not expected to reopen for weeks.

(triple wah!)

(tantrum)

so ---- anyone know anything fun to do in Salinas, King City or Pasa Robles?

Nope?!

Didn't think so.

(pouty face, arms crossed)

yikes, I hadn't heard there was a big sur fire. supposedly more dry lightning possibly coming our way weather-wise too so there will most likely be more fires on your way back :(

You know, I've lived here my entire life and I have never driven down Hwy 1 and done the Big Sur thing. I've always gone down 101 or 5. Shame on me!

ummmmmmm... Salinas used to have some great Mexican restaurants but otherwise neither Salinas or King City has been exactly interesting. I'd probably plan on doing a straight and fast drive through that whole area and spend more time in San Simean/San Luis Obispo beach areas. OH... the Madonna Inn is kind of a bizarre touristy thing... big pink hotel with themed rooms LOL Never stayed there but have had lunch there a few times. www.madonnainn.com

You beat me to it! That's the only thing that is a stand-out in Salinas - they have some very nice antique stores on Main Street too.

San Juan Bautista

Since you'll save time driving, stop in San Juan Bautista... (I like San Juan Foothill Potters on the way into town, but I'm a pottery whore).

The mission there is interesting, it is a site from Vertigo, and you can stand outside the chapel and see the San Andreas fault. There are a few blocks of antiques, include one chock full of Haviland Limoges china in a plethora of old-lady patterns.

A nice outdoor restaurant is Les Jardines de San Juan.

San Luis Obispo is a very nice little college type town, about 45 minutes south of Hearst Castle. If you do go, be sure to visit the Madonna Inn. And the men's room on the lower level.

Robert - Paso Robles is actually very pretty ... and some visit-worthy stuff. Bennett and I stumbled on this fact when we stayed there one night. There *was* a rodeo on too (wuuuf), but that was just gravy.

Wow, if we could just get the tons and tons of water that fell in the mid-west out here . . .
Or some of the melt off from the North Pole http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/06/27/9920/

More then likely you are already on your way down 101...

However, having spent the first half of my childhood on the Monterey Bay, I will tell that Monterey is really not that far from Salinas (If you really wanted to go there, that is). Nothing in Salinas or Pasa Robles, sorry to say. But...then it has been twenty years, who knows?

Bon Voyage!

I know you've returned from the trip, but there's more wine (not whine) tasting in Paso Robles than you can shake your dick at.
