As my brother will tell you - it takes A LOT to get me excited about a movie. but - I spent my lunch hour today - downloading and then dissecting the new trailer for "STAR TREK" coming out May 9th. It looks like they are amping up the action a great deal. It is very smart of them to cast young actors that have been hits with their generation - because it'll draw an entirely new group as well as the hardcore lifelong trekkers. It looks to be the core story of Kirk and Spock meeting - with some character development in new ways for the other main crew. One of the stills I cut was Sulu in a sword fight with someone. Now - we all know trailers - but it looks to me like Uhura and Kirk are romantically involved. I think JJ Abrams is going to rock this story super hard. I'm so excited!!!!!

Here's a link to the new trailer site - the trailer is really worth waiting and watching in HD,

That's some pretty fierce deconstructing!

The uniforms seem to be made out of long johns...or j-cloths...or a certain brand of paper towels.

I thought Kirk and Spock met at an ice cream social?

I can't wait :) Thanks for the stills!

Edit: Just watched the HD version of the trailer (had already seen very low-res pirated versions posted to YouTube). OMFG.

*squee!!*

its insane - between the final episodes of Battlestar Gallactica and this movie - I'm totally geeking out this spring and early summer. I know ST will be a multiple view movie experience - ON IMAX!

I need to find the Hi-Res version.

I saw the Pirated trailer on YouTube 2 days ago and just about wet my pants. And to be honest, I'm not even a HUGE Star Trek fan! (Although I HAVE seen all the movies!)

I think from a storyline perspective, the Kirk/Uhura angle makes sense ...

From an "actors-in-real-life" perspective, though the Kirk/Spock one would be more accurate. ;>)

Most importantly, I agree wholeheartedly that this film will be a huge treat!

I'm not going to rain on your parade; I'm also looking forward to this film, but I do have some concerns.

1) Why is the bridge so BRIGHT? I'm afraid someone's going to suffer retinal burns. Every still I've seen of the bridge shows flares; a sure sign of over-lighting.

2) How are they going to explain introducing Romulans so early in the history of Star Trek? Those of us who remember the series knows that no one had seen a Romulan prior to Kirk's captaincy. However, they also introduced Ferengi and bony-browed Klingons to the "Enterprise" series, so who knows?

Depending on how it's handled this film could be very good or very bad. "Superman Returns" didn't do well, because they tweeked the details just a bit too much (Same with X-men 3). I want this to succeed.

It's bad, I mean Zachary Quinto looks great as Spock, but all I can see is SYLAR SYLAR SYLAR SYLAR.

Yeah, the trailer is very pretty, and I appreciate them resisting the temptation to tart up everything in spacey clothing (I'm thinking the vintage car and the wheeled motorcycle). But WTF were they thinking by depicting construction of a starship ON THE GROUND? That makes no sense at all.

From: [identity profile] bruinwi.livejournal.com
I agree! It makes sense that modules of the ship would be made on the ground (pylons, nacelles, bridge module), but the entire ship??? The amount of energy required to lift that much mass into earth orbit is beyond staggering.

It's like assembling an ocean liner in Colorado. And designing a starship that will never land to accommodate 1G over its entire structure during assembly complicates matters enormously. I can see that it might be more convenient to build it in a breathable atmosphere so that workers don't need vacuum gear, but then again, there are may be plenty of good reasons to build in vacuum too... and if an atmosphere is needed it would still be possible to build it inside a pressurized enclosure in orbit.

ST canon stated long ago that most of the fleet (though not the original Enterprise, at least not explicitly) was built at the Utopia Planitia orbital shipyards above Mars. I had little hope that the typical egocentric Hollywood types would respect established storylines, of course.

Yeah, but Voyager was a very different ship... it was stated more than once that the Intrepid class was unique in possessing the ability to land on planetary surface.
