Tonight was book club night - and we were asked to bring salad. I did a hearts of romaine salad with chunks of persmimmon, fuji apple, blackberry and craisins. I added a sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese and fresh walnuts. It was VERY good; I was worried about the lack of dressing. Since Weight Watchers I rarely if ever put dressing on a salad any more - but my worries were for nothing. It was a good recipe!

Persimmons are another fruit I've recently been learning about. They are delicious simply eaten as is - but were perfect in tonight's salad. This was the last of my box of fruit and vegetables - with a new one coming Wednesday. So - between the bokchoy, persimmons and leeks - - I've learned about three new winter foods. I'm having a great time with all this.

Yummy!

Oh, and leeks - I LOVE leeks! A nice hearty leek & potato soup or chicken & leek pie...

*slurp* :-)

I had it in my head that fresh persimmons were too bitter to eat plain -- maybe I'm confusing them with something else.

I wouldn't think a simple vinaigrette would be a Weight Watchers problem, but then I don't know a whole lot about WW. Points for the oil?

I love leeks, but can't use them at home.

actually - there are two kinds - astringent and nonastringent - astringent - and like rhubarb and other things - without serious sweetening - pretty unedible. but - nonastringent persimmons look more like a tomato and they are delicious. The best way to describe it is as a "rich sweet tomato" its lovely! both respond well to being placed in the kitchen windowsill until they are softened up. Truly delicious!

Well - I was worried than a viniagrette might not agree with the fruit combo and walnuts. (and it's not everyone's dream dressing) so I went dressing free.

Just for the note: Persimons are a variety of a Spanish fruit called "caqui" (kaki, like the green colour) or palosanto (stick + saint). They just have a stiffer consistence, because kakis melt literally in your hands...

I LOVE THEM!

Well, sure. I was actually addressing (ahem) the more general question of salad dressing and Weight Watchers.

my favorite dressings are the "eating right" from safeway - (do you have safeway in massachusetts?) - several tasty varieties with low low low cal.
