1 $4.00 Sugar Free Mocha at Peets TIMES each workday in 2008

equals $960.00 just in just sugar free mochas in 2008.

this does not include afternoon cups or mornings where I've done two trips to the coffee store.

Not any more. I will not buy coffee but for ground coffee for the house and the office in 2009.

Dave is thinking we might go shopping for a latte machine for the house.

This is why my holiday gift card from Mama Bear Left is going to a coffee maker. (Unless it goes to a bread machine...) The Peet's three blocks from my office is WAY more dangerous than Starbucks ever has been.

Sure it's a delonghi - but it doesn't steam milk and add two shots of espresso!

But what about the economy? Think about the shareholders!

Oh, the humanity!

Damn, 1000.00 a year for coffee! When I lived in SF I probably spent the same. I lived right over a coffee shop on Gough. It was great unless they accidentally left the warmers on and then I got to smell burned coffee all night. I vote for buying a latte machine, too. You could get a really nice one and it would pay for itself within a year!

I gave up my morning Starbuck's routine about two months ago. $4.00 per day plus an additional $6 to $8 per day for lunch really starts to add up.

I really haven't figured out the whole lunch angle yet. As a kid I hated sack lunches and I haven't been able to shake that dislike yet. Although I am getting better about bringing in leftovers for lunch.

I bought some nice tuppers - and have started making lunches in advance and freezing them when I make something particularly yummy at home. It's like a Muffin line of microwaveable lunches.

As one man who cares about coffee to another: Don't buy ground coffee. Get a grinder and buy beans.

well I already do that for KONA - and I own a grinder. it was a slip of the keys.

I've been making my own lattes for years. For what you paid for coffee over the last year you could probably buy a fully automatic espresso machine that does almost all the work for you. For a lot less ($250-$400) you can buy a more conventional machine that still doesn't require much effort.

You can get one of those rockin' Tilly machines for less than that!

:>)

Srsly ... a great reminder to all of us how "minor" purchases add up over time.

I buy expensive French roast coffee from La Colombe, the Corsica blend at $13.00 a pound. Gee that sounds like a lot, right? That pound lasts me two weeks and I make coffee every morning; $56.00 worth of coffee house drinks. So you can splurge on beans and still save $20.00 a week.

I grind the beans fresh with a Krups burr grinder (burr grinders grind very evenly and you use far less coffee) and I brew drip coffee in a Krups paper filter machine. My Krups has a timer so I can set it up the night before when I've got an early morning scheduled. The paper filter absorbs some of the oil, so the coffee tastes smoother IMHO.

Purists will shudder, but I take milk in my coffee. I pour a shot of milk in a mug and nuke it for 12 seconds so it doesn't cool down the brew as much.

My espresso machine just sat there gathering dust, so I sold it on eBay. Consider trying conventional coffee for a while before you commit to an expensive espresso machine. As they say, your milage will vary.

Allen got me one of these for Christmas-- granted he works at the place, but still-- and, against all the odds, I totally love it. I have a great latte every day now.

See, this is why I wonder if I got off on at the right stop. I make my coffee with a Mr. Coffee. I buy the Folger's when it's on sale, and when it's not, I buy the Maxwell House. I drink it black.

WTF is wrong with me? Do I have to turn my membership card in?

Try this: get off the bean entirely. It's been wonderful for me* over the past four months. HUGE reduction in overall anxiety level.

(*Okay, I've had the occasional holiday latte from Starbucks, but only one or two a week, and I'm stopping that now, I swear.)

But homemade coffee is just yucky!
I get my mochas for $2 but it's still obscene to think I spend $700 a year on coffee.
On the other hand, few things bring me so much joy in the morning.

My Eric got a Nespresso machine and a frother at Williams Sonoma for $300 plus $75 worth of espresso capsules. He says after 200 coffee drinks it will be paid for. He LOVES it.
