I canceled my hiking trip to the Appalachian Trail today. Why you ask? Well - it occurred to me that I could find an adventure the first week in May a lot closer to home. There are whole parts of California and Oregon I have yet to explore. and it occurs to me - $500 in airfare, $1700 for the booked tour... I can think of a much smarter way to save/invest/spend $2200 than in five days.

So I did cancel the trip back east.

The new idea is that I will take the same week/weekandahalf off - (May 2-12)- and pack up the Mini and Miss Kate and explore. I have in mind a route up along the Sierras starting in Yosemite then north to Lassen Volcanic National Monument, Burney Falls, Mt. Shasta, Grants Pass, over to see my Mom on the Oregon Coast - then up to Portland to see Lance ([livejournal.com profile] althrman) and party with other LJ luminaries - then back down I-5 to home.

Plus they make you walk and hike and stuff. What fun is that. When I'm paying that much for a vacation I want little brown boys to carry me on their shoulders while being fanned and fed grapes.

(I know that sounds horribly racist. Honestly the boys dont HAVE to be brown...)

While I'm now A-T adjacent, Yosemite is still my favorite place on the planet to begin any kind of exploration, itrapersonal or extra-natural. And you, dear friend are someone I hope someday to share a good long walk in the woods with!

Yosemite? To quote Blackadder "You lucky, lucky bastard" ;) Yosemite was one of my favourite places when we lived over there.

Hope you enjoy the trip and may the waterfalls be as magnificent as I remember.

Good move, one could spend an entire lifetime exploring California, Oregon and Washington and still have not seen it all.

Appalachia is beautiful too, but there is so much to see right out our backdoors...

Let us all know when you are inbound to Portland!

I, for one, will be making a pilgrimage down from Seattle to buy you a beer!

(Having hiked two sections of the AT, I actually think the PCT is prettier... blasphemy, I know, but it is True Fact!)
