One can't say that he threw a can of paint on a canvas like the critics of Whistler's nocturnes. I have a soft spot for nocturnes. Our living room has two pastel nocturnes, one of which is a "view across the Hudson" by Glen Cooper Henshaw (a Hoosier painter from the 20's) which looks like, well, blobs of color.
I saw a Remington nocturne in person for the first time during my Houston visit, at the MFAH. They have, like a gallery of both paintings and sculpture.
I have one of his paintings (a print obviously) on the wall in my living room.
I saw this exhibition (http://www.nga.gov/feature/remington/remington.shtm) at the National Gallery in 2004. The Web version at the linky - is really worth looking through - you can learn alot about him as an artist.
this is the nocturne I have in my apartment: Two Men on a Canadian Lake
Well, TX is a red state overall, and also has lots of Baptists, but it also has lots of old-money families with fortunes in the billions. Houston has the lions' share of those ... much more than Dallas. In the US that's the most fertile ground for museums, as far as I can tell. The progressiveness (or lack thereof) of the public sector is a minor character.
Think about NYC, SF, and Houston, and Dallas and Fort Worth, and how the cultural institutions are funded in each of thos cities. Generous and/or egoistic rich folks for the most part.
Wow, I really like that. I was only familiar with his sculptures, which I've always found sort of kitschy. I love Whistler's nocturnes as well, of course.

It's amazing (as is the museum and its collection in general).
I have a fondness for nocturnes too; the ones G. O'Keefe did of scenes in NYC are my favorites of her work.
