So - the treasure island apartment. The potential roommate started emailing me around 2pm yesterday -

- "I'll need your deposit in cash when you get here."
- "You'll need to lock your dog in your room when you are not here."

by 4pm

- "I'll need your deposit plus first and last month's rent when you get here in cash"

by 5pm

- "I need you to move in by May 15th - not June 1st - so I'll need your deposit plus half of May's rent, plus first and last month's rent when you get here in cash"

by 6pm

Dear TI apartment owner - I've decided that coming by and seeing your apartment is not in
my best interest. Good luck on your search.

I totally dodged a bullet.

That's the thing about apartment sharing -- you're not just shopping for an apartment; you really need a good conversation with the potential roommate and make sure you are a good fit.

Holy buckets! That's the kind of near miss that makes the adrenaline flow and a cold sweat break out. Like the bus zipping past just as you were picking your foot up to step off the curb.

I know you are aiming to reduce costs, but after, oh, 20 or so roommates in my life, I've discovered I would rather live in a crappy apartment by myself than a splendid pad with roommates. Only with one of the many did I not get screwed (not in a pleasant way) somehow.
